Military Analysts Warn: Draft May Be Needed in a Year

From the Cox News Service: “If American forces aren’t pulling out of Iraq in a year, a draft will be needed to meet manpower requirements, military analysts warned Wednesday.  With recruitment lagging and no end in sight for U.S. forces in Iraq, the ‘breaking point’ for the nation’s all-volunteer military will be mid-2006, agreed Lawrence Korb, a draft opponent and assistant defense secretary in the Reagan administration, and Phillip Carter, a conscription advocate and former Army captain.”More

The warnings came during a forum titled “The Draft: Inevitable, Avoidable or Preferable?” You can read the transcript here. The Center for American Progress has also archived video recordings (in WMV format) of the event: Mark Shields | Phillip Carter| Larry Korb | Panel Discussion | Q&A.

More from on the possible return of the draft.

Draft when Bush PROMISED, gave a presidental oath, that there would not be one? Impeachment procedings forthcoming.

Our President is not going to re-instate the draft. Why do you think the armed forces are actually pushing people out, just to have a draft next year? You people need to focus on the positive, and not the negative. All I ever hear is how we did the wrong thing by liberating a country. How would you feel if you were an Iraqi, living with the day to day fear that Sadam would make you “give your life for the greater good?” You do realize that he had people put in cells with acid that dripped from the roof right? You also understand that he willingly killed thousands of his own people right? Maybe it’s just me, but I believe that we went to war to liberate a nation. I think we did the right thing. I also think that people should open their eyes, and see the big picture. You should also see that the military is doing good over there. There are new schools, being built. Children are actually going to school, and learning things that they have never been able to learn. You ask me how do i know that? I answer, because I’ve been there.

We have children here that recieve a subpar education. Saddam wasn’t the only dictator in the world, so why were we only focused on him? To translate your “give your life for the greater good” ever heard JFK’s “ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country” sounds very similar. Be nice to go back to the day we worried about ourselves. Fix our own problems. 87 billion…such an unimaginable number to the comman man. Now just what could 87 billion do for US? Oh lets go build schools over there while ours have mold problems, oh lets go build schools over there while we have school violence problems, oh lets go build schools
while many states have appalling literacy rates. You ask me how do i know that? I answer, because I’ve been there.
