Recruiters Target Hurricane Survivors At Astrodome

by

From the Wall Street Journal:

“Ten U.S. Army recruiters are offering volunteer help for Katrina evacuees at Houston’s Astrodome. But the recruiters, struggling to keep enlistment up during Iraq war, are also available with options for the jobless. “Our intent is to approach the evacuees at the right time for them,” says Army spokesman Douglas Smith.”

HOW DARE they try to get folks off welfare and working again, I mean who will the Democrats and liberal assholes like yourself get their power base from if these folks actually get jobs and make money.

The implication seems to be that the recruiter’s actions are less than noble, but I fail to see how this is so. Service in the defense of one’s country is noble service, regardless of politics, and regardless of country. Would the author have expressed similar outrage if it was learned that representatives from the Peace Corps were also assisting evacuees? Opportunity knocks in unorthodox places.
